Canada, First Nations headed in ‘dangerous direction’ as Idle No More hunger strike continues: Former PM Joe Clark

Clark says says he’s concerned Canada and its First Nations are “headed in a dangerous direction.”

“My experience has been that direct and honest dialogue is always useful and sometimes essential, particularly in dealing with issues as complex and multi-faceted as the relations between First Nations and Canada,” his statement read.

“Chief Spence expressed a humble and achievable vision — one which I believe all Canadians can embrace.”

Other current politicians, both opposition NDP and Liberals, issued similar cautions, but also expressed concern for Spence’s health.

Fred Chartrand / The Canadian PressAttawapiskat First Nations Chief Theresa Spence, centre, prepares to meet reporters prior to meeting members of parliament in Ottawa on Sunday.

“She’s a very determined woman and she’s heard the message from others that she’s done what people think she needed to do, but she noted that the prime minister has not talked to anyone, or put out a message that he is willing to meet with leaders, and that’s all she’s asking for,” said New Democrat MP Paul Dewar, who was among 16 of the party’s politicians to be invited inside.

Both Dewar and fellow New Democrat Craig Scott said they were worried about her condition.

“She’s very peaceful in her demeanour, but that goes along with being quite weak now,” said Scott. “She talks about sleeping more than she had earlier, in the first two weeks. I think it’s very clear it’s starting to take a physical toll.”

Concern is strong enough that some have urged to give up and let Opposition politicians take up the fight — something Craig said tried to convey to to her.

“I spoke directly to her and said: ‘You know, you’ve done more anybody could expect one person to do, and there’s no reason you and you alone should have to carry this burden.’ And she said: ‘It’s my burden to carry.’ “

Spence stopped eating solid food on Dec. 11.

Idle No More Gaining Momentum and Forming Plan of Action.
Idle No More is a movement to assert indigenous sovereignty, and to work towards sustainable, renewable development. The movement began in response to Canadian Bill C-45, the government’s omnibus budget implementation bill, that includes changes to land management on reservations which critics feel would enable Canada to control reserves. Along with other areas limiting the control of First Nations in their own territories.

URGENT! PLEASE CONTACT YOUR MAINSTREAM MEDIA! (links to media FB pages where you can post this photo, and to this story, below) Please support Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, on her indefinite hunger strike (started on 11th December 2012) to get Stephen Harper, Canada’s Prime Minister, to help her People, as should have happened a very long time ago. She is willing to die for her People if needs be. Stephen Harper has now ‘broken up’ from Parliament for his Christmas Holidays, and is now in his warm, luxurious home, surrounded by all the trappings of wealth, whilst Chief Spence is spending more and more time sleeping, now in her 8th day of hunger strike, in blizzard conditions, growing weaker by the day…

Quote: shared Walking the Red Road‘s photo.
The Prophecy of the Reunion of the Condor and Eagle is Continuing to Unfold, As Prophecied More Than 500 Years AgoPrior to the arrival of the first European explorers an Indigenous kinship network based in spiritual and cultural relationships and protocols existed for centuries across the Western Hemisphere. Through this network of many networks, this Hoop of Many Hoops, Indigenous Peoples shared knowledge, capacity and resources for mutual aid, trade and development. This ancient network, based in life-preserving and life enhancing spiritual values and principles, known by many Indigenous Peoples across the Hemisphere as the Union of the Condor and Eagle, was broken apart by European colonization and the subsequent decimation of Indigenous Nations and Peoples across the Americas. An ancient prophecy, that predates the arrival of Columbus in 1492 predicts, after a long and bitter spiritual wintertime that the “Reunion of the Condor (Indigenous Peoples of the South), and the Eagle, (Indigenous Peoples of the North),” will be realized. It is promised that when the Reunion of the Condor and Eagle is fully realized, a great era of peace, well-being and prosperity will follow for all members of the Human Family. The Reunion of the Condor and Eagle is intimately connected to other Indigenous prophecies across the Americas. These include, the Time of the Eighth Council Fire, the Hopi Prophecies, the Slaying and Return of the White Buffalo, the Mayan 2012 Prophecy, the Emergence of the Fourth World, the Return of Quetzalcoatl, the Prophecies of Chilam-Balam, and the fulfillment of Black Elk’s Daybreak Star Prophesy. So strong is the belief in this prophecy among some Indigenous Peoples, that the Otomi Peoples in the state of Mexico have built a vast ceremonial amphitheatre dedicated to the “Reunion of the Condor and the Eagle.” The focal point of this amazing construction is a gigantic stone carving of a Condor and an Eagle joined in a loving embrace. It was built largely by the volunteer labour of thousands of materially poor Indigenous Peoples out of love and faith in this prophecy. It was at this location that the first Reunion of the Condor and Eagle, International Indigenous Trade and Social Development Agreement and Unity Pact was signed on May 5, 1999, between grassroots Indigenous leaders of more than 100,000 Indigenous Peoples from Mexico and representatives of First Nations from Canada and the U.S.A. The Movement of the Condor and the Eagle continues to gain strength and momentum through the dedicated action of many different Indigenous networks and their allies across the Americas despite on-going opposition from adverse political and economic forces, especially natural resource extraction interests. This opposition is easy to understand. Collectively the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas have the social capital, land base, natural resources, including water, petroleum, natural gas, timber, rare minerals and gems, fishing and hunting rights and those rights and resources that are still to be justly acquired, that once the Reunion of the Condor and Eagle is fully realized, Indigenous Peoples and their allies will become a decisive and major economic and spiritual force not only in the Americas, but around the world. Indigenous Peoples will then be in a position to mandate the wise and harmonious ways Mother Earth’s gifts should be safely and sustainability developed, as well as, when development is not appropriate, no matter how much profit is to be made. Following the end of the long-count of the Mayan Calendar, December 21, 2012 and the beginning of the 5th Sun, the rising of Indigenous Peoples and their Allies iis destined to accelerate everywhere on Mother Earth. Indigenous women and young people are destined to play a great role in this global transformation process! A movement of unprecedented, principle-centered, unified action! Warm Love and Greetings, Brother Phil Lane Jr. Ihanktowan Dakota and Chickasaw Nations
