Sean Worsley is a 33-year-old Black U.S. veteran and father of two.
He sustained major emotional and physical trauma during his five years
of military service, particuarly his 14-month deployment to Iraq, where
he earned a Purple Heart. His resulting PTSD and chronic back pain were
so severe, doctors in his home state of Arizona prescribed him medical
marijuana, which provided life-changing relief for him. As part of his
medically-prescribed treatment, Worsley often kept his medical marijuana
with him when he traveled, and carried a card everywhere to prove its
legality. But that card, and Worsley's record of service, meant nothing to police in Alabama.
Only 11 U.S. states still have an outright ban on all marijuana use and
unfortunately for Worsley, Alabama is one of them. While driving through
en route to visit his wife's family, he pulled over to buy gas. That's
when he was arrested — and he's now serving a five-year sentence in
jail. Having done nothing wrong, Sean Worlsey is imprisoned hundreds of miles away from his family. His case represents the crux of what is wrong with the criminal justice system in the United States.
Black people are incarcerated at exponentially higher rates than white
people, and subject to constant suspicion and surveillance. Black people
are assumed guilty and dangerous, and when laws vary from state to
state, they suffer the consequences of the harshest ones — even if they
do not live there.
Worsley gave five years of his life to the United States
military, and is being forced to give five more to the prison industrial
complex. This is just wrong! Sign
the petition to demand that the local District Attorney, B. Alison
Sosebee, advocate for Sean Worsley in front of the Alabama Supreme Court
and obtain his freedom!
